Peripheral artery disease (PAD), a form of atherosclerosis manifested in the lower extremities, is associated with higher risk of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and vascular death. If left untreated, patients progress to more advanced stages of PAD known as chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), which is characterized by rest pain, non-healing ischemic ulcers, and gangrene requiring limb amputation. Currently, specialized equipment based on ankle brake index (ABI, not available in most clinical centres) and clinical symptoms (e.g, self-reported pain short distance to walk) are used together to derive a Rutherford score which is used to stage PAD – however, this approach is more subjective, variable and not convenient for routine screening and early detection of PAD. PAD disease progression is highly variable and some CLTI amputee patients present with no PAD symptoms 6 months before onset. With a low survivorship amongst CLTI patients, there is an urgent need to understand the mechanisms of PAD progression for early detection of CLTI that also guides evidence-based treatment decisions. Researchers have developed a screening strategy that utilizes serum biomarkers that differentiate late-stage CLTI from early onset intermittent claudication (IC). This discovery may enable better risk assessment and diagnostic testing for PAD that may progress to more serious CLTI that is often diagnosed late requiring surgical intervention and amputation with poor clinical prognosis.

About Us

As a common circulatory problem Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is associated with a high risk for coronary artery disease (CAD). Our technology will (a) Enable understanding of the utility of the proposed biomarkers in diagnosis, early detection of PAD (b) Examine the relevance of an qRT-PCR detection kit for PAD, ELISA kit for PAD (c) Bring to light the crucial relevance of genetic and prognostic markers in PAD (d) Reveal the association of biomarkers in PAD patients from various ethnic groups. Our solution will help assess the risks for PAD in ethnic groups for early detection and treatment.

Our Value Proposition

PAD and CAD are common manifestations of systemic atherosclerosis. PAD is usually caused by atherosclerotic disease of the arteries that supply the lower extremities, and is a powerful predictor of atherosclerotic disease in other arterial beds. In its most severe form, PAD may lead to limb-threatening ischemia requiring revascularization or amputation.

PAD is widely prevalent, affecting approximately 800,000 Canadians, as many as nine million Americans and 12% to 29% of the elderly. The incidence of PAD increases with age and exposure to atherosclerosis risk factors. The Canadian public is largely unaware of PAD as a prevalent systemic manifestation of atherosclerosis and its associated morbidity and mortality. While demographic studies exist for risk assessment of PAD, there is a lack in identifying and understanding of biomarkers associated with the pathogenic incidence, progression of PAD. While several large cohort studies examining the relevance parameters for PAD is carried out in several countries, a huge lacuna in examining, replicating and understanding the importance of these markers exist with respect to patients from various ethnicities. Our clinical trials-based solution will help to assess the risks for PAD and CAD in various ethnic groups and can be used for early detection and treatment.

Given his strengths of Pharmacy, Medicine and Information Technology, Dr. Kal is passionate about solving real world problems using Technology.

Dr. Mohan Venkataramana is a scientist and serial entrepreneur with a broad range of interests, experience and skills. He received his B.Tech. degree from IIT Madras, M.S. degree from University of Illinois at Chicago and PhD from MIT.

Dr. Rohini Gomathinayagam is a senior research scientist interested in understanding molecular mechanisms pertaining to disease conditions, and developing effective therapeutic strategies. She is also a faculty member at National College, Trichy India.
